As we drove off the Nullarbor highway, into the mulga scrub, we were wondering what we’d gotten ourselves into, we hardly knew these people! Where on earth we were going; then they stopped, got out of the cars and literally made camp almost on the road! We had arrived at Murrawijinie Caves.

We had an early night and then geared up next morning for our first cave of the trip, Murrawijinie. There are three caves in the area, one has red ochre hand stencils just inside the cave.

The caves didn’t have much decoration but the moss growing on the walls was interesting. Photo courtesy of Dirk Stoffels
For this particular cave in the three (above), we had to abseil down into the doline, walked around and then either climbed the caving ladder (which I absolutely hate), or prussic up, which is what I did. Every time I use a caving ladder, I look like a rape victim, my thighs are black and blue.
