How not to drown in high-flow waterfalls

SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS – 16 – 17 & 23 January 2021
This started out as a simple weekend away abseiling Macquarie Pass and a new creek called The Cascades, but then it morphed into a SRT workshop on the Saturday and an opportunity to practice what we’ve taken on board on the Sunday.  I have to admit I wasn’t all that excited about SRT when I did the first workshop, but I’ve come to see the error of my ways! What happened to the Colliery?

BLUE MOUNTAINS – 9 & 10 January 2021
Our first day canyoning in Corkscrew wasn’t all that blog-worthy (apart from some nice pics) and our add on trip into a smaller canyon.  It was cold and wet! Koombanda was blog-worthy because it has been 9 years since I last did it and couldn’t remember a thing – and we were taking a new route out … that was “interesting”!  I had used this route out back in 1999 when we did Jungaburra canyon and walked through the closed Colliery buildings, so it’s not like it was totally unknown! Definitely “Bang for Bucks”

MT WILSON – 20 May 2019 and 9 January 2021
Pretty much every single trip I’ve gone on (well, that’s probably a slight exaggeration), I say I’m going to see everything there is to see “so I never have to return”, but what do you know, I miss something and end up having to go back to either finish the canyon, or make sure I didn’t miss any of it.  This is the story of yet another canyon that I’ve now been to three times – and finally I’ve seen it all! The upside of lots of rain

MANGROVE MOUNTAIN – 6 January 2021
After almost 2 weeks of off and on rain (about 60mm at Mangrove Mountain), it seemed like a good time to check out one of our local waterfalls.  The goal was to practice some of our (newly learned) SRT skills for white water abseiling – albeit not to the level of the BIG waterfalls, but we were intending to start out small sort of like dipping your toe into the deep end!  Trish, Alissa, Brad and Jim joined me and we could see a window in the forecast where there wouldn’t be any rain!  Continue reading

I’d really like to lead a trip where everything goes according to plan!

BLUE MOUNTAINS NP – 27 December 2020 – 3 January 2021
It was supposed to be an epic 8 day trip!  But, over the course of 5 days, there were endless reassessments and we went all the way from Plan A, to Plan I – reducing the trip to 5 days walking.  Given the 7 day weather forecast when we started, this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone!
