WATAGAN MOUNTAINS – GAP CREEK FALLS – FEBRUARY 2013
We’ve always said after a good bucketing down of rain that we should go up and see what the Wollangambe is like, but it’s a good 2.5 hours drive, so instead we thought we’d check out Gap Creek Falls, much closer to home.
We’d had 160ml of rain over 2 days, with only several hours’ notice it was good to have four of us up for the adventure, Jeff B, Trish N, Wendy A and me. The first challenge was to get up Mt Faulk Road after all the rain and whilst it was rutted it was easy going until we came across the second challenge which was fallen trees. Thankfully the three of us girls were able to clear the way and hold back a few other branches while Jeff drove through (the advantage of being the driver).
We finally made it to the car park and headed off crossing swollen creeks, navigating fallen trees and washed out tracks. However, it was worth the effort to see the water flowing covering the full width of the falls, and to feel the wind created by the falls even though we got wet from the spray. We girls were determined to get a photo taken at the base of the falls (and we got soaked and our umbrellas blew inside out).
When we walked around to the top of the falls you could see evidence of where the water level had been a good 500mm higher the night before.
Back to the cars for Trish to de-leech; we were all glad she came along as she attracted all the leeches while the rest of us got off scott-free, thanks Trish.
We then headed around to Monkey Face Lookout and took in the view with a cup of tea while we set up an abseil and then went exploring for an exit point. Luckily we found one and didn’t have to prussic back up, looks like a great spot for an abseil practice day. A great day out had by all; it was good to get out after all the rain.
Yep I remember that it was pretty cool and surprisingly windy at the base of the falls
It’s a pity that the rain has stopped, would be cool to take another look at the falls after this week’s rain!
