My first mistake was agreeing to do a one day canyon on the Newnes Plateau, and not driving up the night before, and driving home the day after.  What is it with Lindsay and these “day” canyon trips, it was a round trip of 6.5 hours before we even did the canyon (which turned into an epic).  Yes, I’d never done Surefire and I really wanted to do it, but sometimes you have to stop yourself! Nullarbor – Mullamullang Cave – September 2013

salt crystal formationsThis was our last cave for the expedition, and Nat saved the best for last, 12.3k of caving, if you have the stamina.  You walk down into the doline and then underground.  At first we had to clamber over rocks and boulders and then the floor of the cave flattened out for a while.  We walked along, and then, in front of us was this huge dune of sand (The Dune). Nullarbor – Thampana Rockhole – September 2013

1656THAMPANANA ROCKHOLE was our next cave, for this one you had to abseil down a massive hole and then prussic out.  From a distance, you wouldn’t even realise that the rockhole was there, the ground was so flat and there was only a small depression to indicate that there was “something” there. Nullarbor – Old Homestead Cave – September 2013

Walking out to Old HomesteadAfter leaving Forrest we drove down to Old Homestead Cave.  After the road between Weebubbie and Forrest, we found ourselves on a veritable super highway, flat, no rocks but still dusty.  Nothing much to see, just MMBA, I took a few photos of the great open spaces and one effort at an arty shot.  One wondered why they built a fence out in the middle of no-where, a lot of effort to go to, I think it was some sort of corral. Nullarbor – Abrakurrie Cave – September 2013
